2nd CREATE Forum held, SEC wins 1st Student Quiz



The team of Surigao Education Center won the 1st CREATE Student Quiz Show held during the 2nd CREATE Forum at SEC Mini-Hotel, Surigao City on July 10-11, 2008.

The team composed of Gary C. Merka, Elson S. Degamon and Jundel M. Subillaga bested the other 12 teams from St. Paul University Surigao (SPUS) , STI College - Surigao (STI-Surigao) , Saint Joseph Institute of Technology (SJIT) and Surigao Education Center (SEC). The quiz show foused on three categories of questions: Mathematics - 40%, Science and Technology - 40%, and for variety, General Information - 20%.

Each team was composed of three student-delegates, with an HEI allowed to field in up to 3 teams. The five teams which made to the 2nd and 3rd (final) round were the following: 2 teams from SJIT, 1 team from STI, 1 team from SEC and 1 team from SPUS. Top 3 teams received a throphy each for the college, each winning participants received a certificate.

The 2nd CREATE Forum was graced by Hon. Alfonso S. Casurra, City Mayor of Surigao, the Most Outstanding City Mayor of the Philippines in the 2006 Local Government Leadership Awards. Mayor Cassura, a lawyer by profession, gave a very informative speech, well lauded by the participating faculty members and students from ten participating colleges and universities.

Also present during the opening ceremonies to gave their messages were Sister Merceditas Ang, President of St. Paul University Surigao and Dr. Jocelyn T. Medina, President of Surigao State College of Technology. Dr. Bievenido Alex K. Bautista, President of Surigao Education Center, and Engr. Leonel A. Santos, CEO of STI College Surigao, were represented by their respective deans.

The speakers in the 2nd CREATE Forum included: Dr. Florencio Sunico, OIC-Regional Director of TESDA; Dr. Fernando Hererra, SJIT Research Director; Engr. Nilo H. Calomot, SEC Planning and Research Director; a representative from Surigao City Environment and Natural Resources Office; Engr. Leonel A. Santos, Former President of PACEMCO and Vice Chairman of Caraga Regional Development Council; and Engr. Ramil A. Sanchez of CHED Caraga.

The participants visited the cement plant of Pacific Cement Company and the Sanitary Landfill Project of the city. The 2nd CREATE Forum was made possible through the combined efforts of the deans and faculty of the host institutions: SEC, SPUS, SSCT and STI-Surigao. The 3rd CREATE Forum next year will be held in Butuan City and is expected to have more faculty members and students participating in.
